Linham Barns is a tranquil retreat for Claire and Ollie and guests alike, offering a connection to the natural beauty of Devon and the nearby coastline.

Claire and Ollie envisioned Linham Barns as an escape, meticulously renovating the barn conversion with modern yet natural interiors. However, they soon realised that the garden was yet to reach its full potential, prompting them to seek the expertise of a garden designer.

The garden lacked space for larger gatherings and intimacy, leaving guests exposed to the elements.

Respecting the property’s rich history and rural setting, any enhancements had to harmonise with the surroundings, requiring minimal upkeep for the holiday stay.

Drawing inspiration from the site’s agricultural past, I integrated remnants of the past into the new design.

The derelict barn adjacent to the house was repurposed as a sheltered enclave, now housing a welcoming fire pit with verdant planting and climbers clothing the weathered walls, climbing gracefully along tension wires.

The footprint of a long-forgotten greenhouse was repurposed into a Petanque court, its surface compacted with self-binding gravel, providing a playful escape for guests.

Expanding the main terrace created ample space for outdoor dining, utilising locally sourced Yorkstone that blends seamlessly with the barn’s historic stonework. Drought-tolerant plants border the terrace, thriving in the gravel beds despite Devon’s unpredictable climate.

Addressing the need for a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors, we reshaped the terrain behind the house, creating a sunken gathering area embraced by native wildflowers. A 5-metre custom bench, crafted from durable mild steel and Accoya modified timber, offers a place for reflection and relaxation.

The result is a garden that enhances the retreat experience, providing spaces for gathering, relaxation, and play whilst seamlessly blending with the natural beauty of the surroundings. Linham Barns now boasts a garden that captivates guests throughout the seasons, a testament to Claire and Ollie’s vision of creating a haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

“We were drawn to Jamie as we were impressed his portfolio and his modern take on a ‘wild’ garden. When we talked through the potential project, he was able to articulate our basic ideas into a creative plan. We felt that he ‘got’ us and what we wanted very quickly. We had a very 2D garden and he was able to bring interest and different zones in to the space. He has fulfilled our brief for easy to maintain planting with his vast knowledge of plants. The space is now more usable, relaxing and attractive to look at.”
